I loves a gimmick, me. And when I heard that a coffee house had opened on St Nicholas Street which not only had piles of boardgames but also swings for seats, well I couldn’t wait to visit.
Luckily, Playground Coffee House hasn’t rested on its laurels when it comes to the food and drink side of things either. I rate their coffee among the best in town – and that’s a bold statement when you consider that their neighbours include coffee maestros Full Court Press and Small St Espresso.
As well as having the choice of a couple of different coffee blends at any given time (and a variety of ways for it to be prepared), there’s also an extensive selection of teas, as well as the option to have juices or smoothies.
There’s always a mouthwatering selection of cakes provided by Bosh! (I’m particularly obsessed with the white chocolate and raspberry blondie) and they’ve recently added a new menu, comprising of grilled cheese sandwiches, salads and soups.
Having worked my way through most of the menu now, I can attest to it all being very tasty indeed – particularly the Cisco Kid; grilled cheese with salami, gherkins and Dijon mustard – mmm mmm mmm! Luckily chef James is always experimenting in the kitchen and so most days you’ll undoubtably find a new special on the board (the latest suggestion being grilled cheese and no bean chilli, oof!)
The ethos at Playground has always been to be as adventurous and fun with their approach to food & drink as they are with the decor, and I think they’ve hit their stride now with their new menu and a friendly, enthusiastic team both at the counter and in the kitchen.
Believe me, I’m as surprised as you are that when I tell you to visit Playground, I’ll be mostly doing so to get you to try their first rate coffee and gorgeous oozy cheese sandwiches rather than just visiting for the swings and games – and any establishment which manages to get my attention away from those has got to be doing something special, eh?
