Dauphinoise Potatoes Recipe – Feed the Millions Cheaply

I was dying to try out a new recipe for SaucyPans.

I had some sort of leek, cabbage, lots of vege type dish in mind, a one-pot meal that’s warming in this weather (It’s not that cold but let’s pretend it is).

When I asked on Twitter for any ideas, I got a request for something without meat and preferably cheap.

A budget dinner! I wanted a nice meal that doesn’t feel cheap however… This dish costs less than a Great British Pound per serving and you will definitely not feel like you’re eating on a budget. What could be more comforting than potatoes and lashings of double cream? Someone to cuddle you in front of a log fire with a box of chocolates? Yeah, probably, but this will fill you up! Fill you up with food, you filth pots.

Dauphinoise Potatoes

Serves: 4 people (or 2 as a main)


  • 800g of Floury Potatoes (Maris Piper, Kind Edward)
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic (minced)
  • 400ml Double Cream
  • 1/2 tsp of Cayenne Pepper (optional)
  • Salt and Pepper (to taste)
  • Pinch of Nutmeg (optional)

Preheat your oven to: 160C

Peel your potatoes and slice them as thin as you can. Use a mandolin if you have one, if not, patience and a good knife will do. The slices should be translucent. Chuck the potatoes in a big mixing bowl, season with salt and pepper to taste. Add a good amount of it because potatoes are like the black hole of seasoning. Add the other spices if you are using them and the garlic.

Add the cream and mix thoroughly so we don’t have pockets of spice or garlic.

In a small but deep oven dish, distribute the potatoes evenly and press down with a spoon to make the whole thing compact.

Slide in the oven for 1-1.5 hours.

Check every 20 mins whether the top is drying out and press down with a spatula to keep it moist.

If the cream looks like it is splitting, your oven is too hot, turn the heat down!

At the end of the hour, see whether the potatoes are cooked (probably). You can up the heat to 200C to brown the top off and make it crispy. Once it’s golden, remove from the oven and serve.

Since this is a rich dish to eat on its own, I recommend eating some pickles with it. Or drink some cider to wash it down.

Very cheap and indulgent. If you want you could add fried bacon bits, or serve it as a side, like I did.

  1. OMG you are so my kind of person! It is the end of September so I’d definitely say that’s time for some stodge. I absolutely love Dauphinoise Potatoes with salad as an autumn/winter staple dinner; I have never tried nutmeg and cayenne pepper with it though. They sound like a very good addition to warm it up even more – can’t wait to try ๐Ÿ™‚ You’ve made me soooo hungry now!

    1. Hahaha! I am glad you liked my post. It’s definitely one of these dishes you wanna eat when it’s rainy and cold outside. I actually had Dauphinoise potatoes as a side to a Sunday roast in a pub and it was incredible!
