Review: Tuk Tuck, Bristol

I bloody love Korean food, and since the recent closures of Surakhan on Park Row and Kimchi Kim on Gloucester Road, I’ve found my choice even more limited.

Of course there are still the very brilliant Dain Korea on Gloucester Road (good value, extensive menu, BYO) and Sky Kong Kong next to the Bearpit (daily-changing menu, a bargain at £12.50 every night for starter & main), but if you want a snappy lunch on the go, there wan’t much until Tuk Tuck came along.

Sitting on the corner of Colston Av and St Stephens St, this dinky cafe serves up a short but sweet menu of Korean, Japanese and Thai dishes.

My favourite on their menu is the classic bibimbap (available with tofu, poached chicken or bulgogi – marinated beef strips), a rice dish that is served with shredded vegetables, the protein of your choice and a fried egg on top – hearty fare which also manages to feel wholesome.

However I also really love the chicken katsu curry and their kimchi fries (highly addictive, order with caution), and they seem to introduce new dishes and specials fairly often (latest ones being chicken satay, and Korean tacos have made an appearance in the past!).

There’s a good selection of dishes which are vegan or can be made so, and spice levels are pretty much down to you too – nothing comes up really spicy, but tubs of gochujang (Korean chilli paste, made into a sauce) and bottles of sriracha are provided.

The prices are very decent to start with, but you can usually find deals on Wriggle throughout the week – either way I’d make Tuk Tuck a stop off the next time you’re undecided for lunch (or dinner) in the centre, it keeps things fairly simple while delivering on taste, value and friendliness. Two thumbs up!
